lecture: Console Hacking

A brief overview of console hacks, from the NES (1983) to PS3 (2006), maybe more

Event_large

For as long as gaming consoles have been around, hackers have been finding ways to circumvent their hardware and software protections. This lecture explores a brief history of console hacks, starting at the NES in 1983 and ending (at least) at the PlayStation 3, released in 2006.

The lecture is quick run-through of how hackers broke through the varying protections of the NES, PSX (PS1), XBOX and PS3 (and possibly others, pending time). The presentation shows the arms race between console manufacturers implementing ever-increasingly complex security and the hackers finding new and clever ways to circumvent those protections through out-of-the-box thinking.
